We are excited to feature Focus James, Transformational Life Coach, extraordinary presenter from our 4th Annual Wellness & Empowerment Conference and an authentic positive beauty for the month of June. Say hello to Focus James!! She has been representing the underdog since her playground days in Elementary School. Her passion for the growth of children and young adults compelled her to earn her first degree in Early Childhood Education. Therefore, she can speak to the little boy or girl inside of each of us. Focus went on to earn her second degree in Communications, Theater, Broadcast and Journalism. This has led her to become a master communicator and enhanced her ability to hear beyond spoken words, breathing life into untold stories. Focus’ latest accomplishment is a Speaker’s Certificate awarded by Inspire2speak, a program organized by master storyteller Les Brown and master motivator James Dentley.
“No matter how thin you slice it there’s always two sides, stay open!”
What is your definition of a leader?
A leader is a visionary who masters enrollment, team building, the ability to delegate and create under studies of leaders, and the epitome of that leadership is she leaves a predecessor and legacy.
If you can travel anywhere in the world, where would that be and why?
Ireland: My Irish Great Grandfather Alexandra O’Connor traveled from Ireland to South Carolina as a merchant seaman. He fell in love with my Great Grandmother Lillian in South Carolina married with 9 children. WHY; I would love to unfold that part of our heritage.
What do you do to get fit, have fun and feel sexy?
FIT: I reach in my night stand drawer every morning for my Le-Vel vitamins and wash them down with a full bottle of water. My workout clothes are placed close to my bed so I can easily step right into them. In 7 minutes the good stuff in them kicks in with the energy I need to workout. I pop a Le-vel patch on, bathroom, brush my teeth for mint wakes me. Protein smoothie, review my calendar, set my personal development video to watch while I complete a 30-minute workout or if I read a lot the night before I reward myself with some hilarious Stand Up Comedy or Trevor Noah the Daily Show.
FUN: I love to laugh! So, throughout the day I watch Stand Up Comedy as a relief to stress and reward myself for an accomplishment in small increments of 10 minutes or so. Just enough to have me crack up and get energy to move forward. It reminds me not to take my self and life too serious
To feel SEXY, I have a standing weekly appointment at Hand and Stone for a full body massage. Once a month I get a manicure and pedicure. These treats keep me present to my beautiful temple and the need to take care of it. My motivation to keep treating myself to the massage, manicure and pedicure stems from a funny story, one day, as I was at a pit stop at the gas station after my mani/pedi, I had a very distinguish gentlemen say to me, “Please let me tell you that your toes look like candy!” His statement was accompanied by his intense stare. As I laughed, “I said I’m listening!” But, to myself, I said, “Note to self, I have to keep the candy fresh!”
What are your (3) staple outfits in your closet.
My Focus of Love T-shirts, which are cut to design and can be worn with jeans or dress pants to match the occasion. An A-line dress, it shows off my curves and makes me feel sexy and girly.Blazers, I love how they accessorize the above outfits adding flare and depth to the look, when needed.
What is your definition of a DivaGirl?
My definition of a DivaGirl, is one that is living a balanced purposeful life. I created the Focus of Love Wheel of Life (which includes: Faith, Family, Finance, Fitness, Freedom and Fun), as a tool to coach my clients to live in their highest frequency and have the life they LOVE. The 6 lifestyle pillar of DivaGirl, mirror in so many ways the components of The Wheel of Life!!
How does being a DivaGirl make you feel empowered and inspired?
It was a no brainer to me to be a part of this movement. I feel empowered to be included in such a community because we function from abundance, and NOT lack. The DivaGirl culture gets that its more than enough for all of us to win, serve and be served.
What are your three major accomplishments and why?
Doing the work to heal from a tumultuous childhood and a marriage at 18 that failed! I am so grateful I healed from that story and no longer stand in it BUT stand on it to inspire others.
Setting my life up mentally, emotionally, financially and in every other way, so that I was able to spend the last 90 days of my mother’s life with her. The last Saturday she was verbal she said, “Tanikia, call my sister. I need to say goodbye, I am not going to make it thru this one (4th bout of cancer).” Per Mom’s request, for the next hour or so I called people, set up the call and held the phone to mom’s ear to say goodbye! That’s an awesome way to transition! Beautiful! She loved us with all she had and for that I am grateful! In her death on December 13, 2017, The Focus of Love was birthed in its fullness. Thank you, Mom for bringing to pass a new “Life” in me through your last 90 days.
When I purchased my first home!! I discovered while working with a life coach, that I told myself at the age of 21, during my divorce and foreclosure process on the home my husband brought for me, that, “I will never buy a house because I don’t want it taken from me.” BREAKTHROUGH! We got that complete and now I own two homes and a lot!! TRANSFORMATION!!
Aside from your family and close friends, who are your other outside influencers and how have they changed you?
Mike and Robbie Mathew: My business coaches, they co-generate the evolution of my business and clients and create new lines of service and income. “No one can perform the service you perform, like you can deliver, ” says Coach Mike!
Curtis May: My financial coach, wealth is a principal and a mindset. Be your own banker and have your dollar do more than one job.
James Dentley and Kara Scott at inspired2speak, a 5 day 12 hour speaker camp: I got an inside view of what it is to live your purpose, design the love you want and create a life you love as a couple and duplicate it for others!
Favorite Quote/Motto that you live by?
No matter how thin you slice it there’s always two sides, stay open!
If you can have dinner with someone from past, present, or future who would it be and why?
Past: Madam CJ Walker: she wore her husband’s name, became an entrepreneur in the 1800’s. Our dinner conversations would be about who she had to become to see herself in that way and to live that way moment to moment on a daily basis, just extraordinary.
Present: Derick Jaxn: The Self Love Ambassador. Beautiful mind and body. I would love to discuss how to get his level of conviction and how he runs his back office to manage the volume of business and growth.
Future: (Myself) Focus, the Mogul and owner of eight Focus Resorts. I would love to have dinner with her at 65 years old to tell me what to do now to trim the learning curve, cause more people to transform and give solace.
What is the last book you read?
Beyond The Book: Here’s how to get your book in the hands of people ready to do business with you! by Dean Jackson
What has been challenging for you as an entrepreneur? How did you overcome it?
My challenge as an entrepreneurial is maintaining my current lifestyle as a mom and working in corporate America 40 plus hours a week and then having the energy, the wherewithal, and the creativity to then create my business, brand and bring my vision to pass. To overcome my challenge will be an on-going challenge. Even upon me being a full-time entrepreneur, the dynamics of children is a level of responsibility the requires me to be present with time and intention that only I can give. A parent can delegate many parental responsibilities, the one thing that can NOT be delegated is quality time. Therefore, to ensure that I have quality time for my children I utilize the following: A drop off laundry service, which puts 3 hours bi-weekly back into my life that I schedule for quality time with my children. A maid service, which also frees up my schedule and relieves me from extending the energy that would be needed to complete that task, thus, depleting the needed energy for my children. Lastly, I work for myself from 1 – 3:30 am, because I normally fall asleep with my 8-year-old around 8:30-9 pm, so I get about a 5 hour of sleep I am rejuvenated and ready to go.
